What we aim?

Soil salinity is a major problem hindering the crop production in different regions of the world, including Turkey. In this TUBITAK funded 1003 project, we are working at agribiotech Lab to transfer the genes responsible for salt resistance in some of our promising wheat genotypes and develop salt tolerant wheat varieties. Moreover, as several regions in the world are suffering from both soil salinity and boron toxicity simultaneously, another target of the project is to transfer salt tolerance genes to one of our already known Boron tolerant bread wheat genotypes. Other than the usage of molecular biology based techniques, involvement of physiological studies, elemental analysis and nutritional studies of the developed breeding lines will provide new insights in to salt tolerance of wheat genotypes. The alliance between researchers throughout the Turkey under this project will offer a substantial prospect for the usage of scientific expertise and assets for the development of salt tolerant wheat crops.
